Just as everything in life, dentures also need to be cared for. Especially if they are intended to be worn for many, many years. And since taking care of these dentures might be something you've never had to do before, we’ll share some tips on how to do it well:
- The first and most basic tip we could give you is to wear them the most during the day. Doing so will prevent bone loss as there will be stimulation of the bone due to the pressure of your dentures.
- Always listen to your dentist in Waterloo! They will be able to show you the best method to clean your dentures. You should at least clean them twice a day and apply a cleaning solution a minimum of three times a week.
- Another very basic tip is not to lose them, and this might seem very obvious. However, misplacing dentures is the one thing people wearing them do the most. Taking them out to eat, wrapping them in a napkin, then forgetting about them and accidentally throwing them away is always a possibility. So try to keep your dentures near you and at sight.
- They’re dentures, not sword-making material! Never use hot water to soak them as it could melt the plastic and affect their shape.
- Don’t let your dentures get too dry! If they get dry, they can twist. Always soak them with enough water and cleaning solution and you'll be good to go.
- Dentures can be very fragile. When cleaning or handling them, you should place a folded towel on your sink. That way, if you drop them, you decrease the risk of breaking them.
- Be careful with your dog or cat! Pets, just like little kids, are very curious and if you leave your denture within the reach of one, chances are you might need to go to a dentist near you. So, it is always a good thing to keep your dentures near you, not your pets!
- When using dentures, rinsing them after eating is a must. The best thing about it is that you’ll find it very simple to do. Hold the denture under running water and keep it there for a few minutes to allow the food and leftovers to be washed away. If you don’t do this, you risk getting an infection in your soft tissue under the denture.
- Do not use your old, hard toothbrush to clean removable dentures. That toothbrush and regular toothpaste can damage them and create patches on them, which attract bacteria. Instead, use a very soft toothbrush and toothpaste made especially for this purpose.
- A new denture-user should visit their dentist again within 24 to 48 hours of getting their denture fitted for the first time. Doing so will help the professional see if any adjustments are needed. With a denture, everything, from your style of eating to the movements you make with your mouth while speaking will change. So make sure it fits you as best as possible!
When caring for dentures, it is essential that you also take care of your mouth and gums, too. This is because they are exposed to the pressure of the denture the whole day. Remember to ask the dentist near you any possible doubts you might have about the care of your dentures.
